Similarly to gabions, gabion mattresses are made in the form of rectangular boxes. The main difference is the height of the mattress with a large area (length and width) at the same time. It is assumed that the height of a mattress can be 0.3m, whereas a height exceeding that of a gabion is already a gabion.
They are used for surface development of road and railway slopes and banks on watercourses and reservoirs. They are treated as an anti-erosion structure and also as the so-called surface (plate) drainage.
They are also used for building up the bottom of watercourses, making cascades on watercourses and barrages.
Just like gabions, gabion mattresses are made of hexagonal wire mesh with different anti-corrosion coatings and stainless steel.
